This is the final post, and we all knew this was coming…
Nigger. The word is foul. It is at the very tip top of a tall pyramid of racial slurs used for black people – the people for whom more flagrant racial slurs exist than any other race.

Notwithstanding the atrociousness of the word itself, ‘Nigger’ has had a very interesting history. It naturally started out as a dismissive term used by whites to describe blacks, and it didn’t even necessarily have racist connotations. It remained in this form until the 19th century, when the term slowly transformed from racial to racist. The racist connotation of ‘nigger’ came to a head during the Civil Rights movement, by whose time the word had gone well beyond descriptive and dismissive, becoming instead an angry and proactive way to harshly degrade blacks (in parallel with the term ‘boy’ applied to grown fucking men).
Then came the hip hop generation, and the shit got complicated. Namely, black people started using the word everywhere from the corner store to the recording studio in what has widely been regarded as an effort to ‘take back’ the word and remove its harmful power. However good the intentions were in doing this, a single clear negative consequence arose…
Well-meaning whites started thinking it was OK to say it, too.

Oddly enough, when black people started using the word, non-blacks (whites in particular) wanted to convince themselves that the word ceased to be as a racial slur, and that it was OK for everyone to use it. Ignoring the patent weirdness of so-called non-racist white people being so eager to call black people ‘niggers’, every black person in America has certainly heard a non-black person make the following statement with complete and utter sincerity:
“I don’t get it. I mean, if black people can say it then why can’t I?”
This person is usually named ‘Chad’ and looks like this fucking guy:

Before I address Chad, I need to explain something. Black people, like all people, have what’s called a boiling point. A boiling point is a person’s psychological threshold which, when crossed, causes that person to lose control of his or her normally functioning self. Each time a person is angered, fucked with, betrayed, or otherwise ill-treated, that person gets closer to his boiling point. Interestingly, race tends to be the determining factor in the behavior that results when a person actually reaches his boiling point. For example:

When Chad asks a black person “why can’t I say ‘nigger’”, 95% of black people reach their boiling point IMMEDIATELY. Contrary to popular belief, though, a black person who reaches his boiling point will usually not shoot you, shank you, or date your daughter…he will simply shut down intellectually. A blank, idiotic look creeps over his face, after which he will try to give you a response, but the words simply don’t come. He shakes his head and walks away exasperated, leaving Chad with the mistaken impression that he has a good point.

Fortunately, I’ve heard the Chad Question so many times that I’ve developed a scripted response to it:
Chad: “I don’t get it. I mean, if black people can say it then why can’t I?”
Me: “Do you have a girlfriend?”
Chad: “Uh, yea…”
Me: “Do you fuck her?”
Chad: “…..yeah….”
Me: “Cool. Mind if I fuck her?”
Chad: “DUDE! NOT COOL!”
Me: “I don’t get it. I mean, if you can fuck her then why can’t I?”
Unfortunately, this response isn’t given nearly often enough, so now we’re at the point where white people are so comfortable with the word ‘nigger’ that it can be heard, uncensored, on television programs that won’t even allow vaginas (not women) to be referred to as ‘pussies’. Abso-fucking-lutely amazing.
Barack Obama winning the presidency combined with newfound white comfort with the ‘N’ word will create the perfect storm of conditions for The Man to declare racism legally dead. After that, the only way we’ll be able to get them to examine their own inherent racsim will be to show them pictures of my friends like this one and demand they recognize how angry/uncomfortable they became:

I would like to say, That I have really, really enjoyed your blog. I am sad to see it go. I love that you tackled this subject. I wondered what your stance was on the “n!gger” issue, especially with you having such a diverse background and circle of friends. I totally agree.. what infuriates me more than white people wanting to use the word, are black people who feel the same way. Nothing highlighted this phenomenon more for me than that ice cube documentary where the black and white family trade places and the black boy felt like it was cool for his friend to use the word and a white girl had to stand up and say that it made HER uncomfortable. Edumucated, I can see how black people, especially educated ones can get mad at blacks who seem to not want to uplift themselves but we should see them as victims of the system and do our best to give back, or at least try to do as much as we can for the youth.
Most of us are educated because our parents were and we are lucky as hell. If our parents were not educated they did our damndest to make sure we were. Nobody gets anywhere without someone helping them or at least telling them they can do it. Not to mention kids who grow up hearing they aint never gonna be shit. I used to teach in DC public schools and that shit was draining. The stories these kids told…it was a surprise they were looking to the future at all.

I personally dont like when whites use nigger. I admit that I use it way too much an I am making a conscious effort to stop. It’s hard though because I’m in college and some of my black friends just do some outright niggerish stuff sometimes. I try to replace it with ghetto (which isnt much better) but it’s a hard habit to break.
It’s bad enough that white people use but hispanics, latinos, and any other race feel liberated to use it. I was in the club last night just having a grand ol time when I look up at the television to find it on the hispanic station. My spanish is rusty so I didnt know what it meant but there was a news-like setting with the caption in big letters NIGGA. Not nigger or niggah but NIGGA!! I was beyond pissed!! I was so mad!! What made it worse was that the mexicans were doing “nigga” activities that they felt black people would do. I was so embarassed, sad, and disgusted. It ruined my whole mood for the rest of the night.

Im sure there are people who will have something to say about it but I am white, have dated interracially quite often and live in Mississippi (where some think racism is on a rampage, I suppose)
However, I am CONSTANTLY the only one who asks other to not use the n-word. Among my friends, we refer to it as ‘the word’ and when they are mad at me or want to offend me, that is the first thing they will say.
I am ashamed of the history of this country but there are some people who do want to change and yes, the word was created for poor use and as long as people accept it as acceptable (esp the Soulja Boy case, that was just ignorant) it will never change.

The first time I heard the n-word was also from a black person, as a previous comment mentioned, when I went home to ask my mother about it, she said it was a word that meant trash, and that it crossed all racially lines and was never to be used or accepted in our house but it is quite frustrated feeling uncomfortable listening to music because I have to obviously edit myself from the lack of it being done by the artist…

Nigger is not a word used over here much.. we had nignog, jungle bunny back in the seventies but only old northerners (ie from the north of england or anywhere outside london to me!) use those terms now… darkie is the word of choice for yt folk here if they want to go there….
dulux paint company had the colour nigger brown for a long while til the 70′s also.. nice!.. i have never been able to find a swtach for it though….

I have a book called Nigger: The Career of A Troublesome Word by author Randall Kennedy. Its a pretty quick read, but it goes into the depth of the word, the many forms in which it is used and how it effects people. The book also compares Nigger to other racial slurs as honkey, wetback, cracker etc, etc.
As a child and well into my adult years I never would say nigga. Even tho most of my friends would throw it around I could never get that word to come out of my mouth. Lately I have been using the term. Not often, but usually as a way to express my lack of admiration for certain Black folks. Like for example if I see some dude pull up to an apartment in a tricked out Escalade, I would say ‘look at this fool-ass nigga’. As a black person I have never used it as a term of endearment. But I still feel I have permission to use the term. And I dont have a problem with Black people using the word as a term of endearment. But I feel it is absolutely off limits to whites and other minorites. But I can make an exception for Puerto Ricans, if theyre Black.
And Chris, I hope you change your mind, but I kno you wont

I spent 20 minutes on a mile-long post here that was basically a fuck you to the writer of this blog. It’s disappointing to see that there are people out there who want to take away the white man’s freedom of speech.
Anyone can use any word, in any way that they want to.

Many women object to the use of a word that begins with ‘c’ and rhymes with stunt. Its not a word I use very often and never in front of a woman. However I do know one or two girls who will use the word themselves, as an insult. As far as Im concerned the fact that they use it means that Im given de facto permission to use it in front of them too (though I dont actually).

when i think of a jew i think of someone who likely has a knack for working with money.
when i think of a chink i think of someone whos badass at martial arts, or is really good at math.
when i think of a spic i think of someone who is generally resilient and easygoing and has strong ties to their family, and culture.
but when you think of a nigger, you think of someone who is likely to lose it and murder people if they hear the word nigger. unless a nigger says it, cause even niggers are afraid of niggers.
white people are actually in it with you, when i hear “white trash” i think of overweight mothers who are bad at raising children, halftarded blonds who were malnourished as a child and wears the same size clothes she did when she was seven whether they fit or not, a fat guy with a rebel flag tattoo that goes “WooWee” as he slams his head into a beer can, the weird lanky dude with a goatee and a meth habit. fortunately this kind of thing is funny and we dont care.
